On Friday we were defeated in a close contest in the final 2-1 to Los Internationals. We missed a penalty kick and were unfortunate to not have had a clear obstruction call on their winning goal on our goal-line. This time we were better organized and had our share of chances on their frame, very unfortunate to come away with a loss. It was our third game in four days in a very compact playoff schedule. Coming in as the second seed we defeated the Good Calls and endured but overcame a very physical Pub II side in the semi-final the following night. The Pub II match took a lot out of our guys and being as sharp as I wanted our guys to be for the final proved impossible. In the final against our rivals Los Internationals we were without all three of our regular forwards (probably 90% of our scorers) and still put in a good effort.
I thought we had a bounce-back year in 2010. Unlike 2009 when the club got really thin in the middle of the year, 2010 was a year riddled by a crazy rash of injuries but we were deep enough to weather those challenges. Over the entire 31 game 7 month schedule we set a club record for goals scored (107) behind big contributions from Chad Fisher, Justin Tipsord and Bobby Neeley who shared the forward responsibilities. In defense we again very solid all year long, conceding another low count of 43 goals allowed. Anchored by Jamie Cox and James Nettleton and a consistent cast of defenders in the back we were well organized in front of goalie Joe Thulin who had his best year. I had brought in some new faces this year to fill very specific needs and they worked-out well. The overall success and record of the club remained very high and I was pleased with our ability to compete against anyone. Despite all of this our inability to win two finals this year will sit sourly on all the players over the winter. In 2011 there will be changes coming.
